Ten ways to ride Norway

Every trip starts and ends at Oslo Airport. Pick quiet eastern forests, the great fjords, the Trans Euro Trail – ride all the way to the end of Europe, or spend a winter day sideways on a frozen lake.

Every route here is a suggestion, and the route itself is free. You pay for the motorcycle and you book your own nights along the way – accommodation is not included and cannot be booked through us.

Every trip needs a motorcycle and a bed for every night. We can hold a motorcycle for you – the fjord hotels in July cannot, so book those as soon as your dates are fixed. Put me on the priority list and pick your week before the bikes are gone.

Five months of riding, no two alike – and in May and September the road is quieter and the beds are cheaper. See what each month is like

Ten routes not quite it? Draw your own line across Norway. Click the places you want to ride on the map – and the trip builder turns them into daily stages, suggests where to stop for the night and shows you what the motorcycle costs.

Build your own route Free, no account, nothing is booked – it takes about two minutes.

The riding season · May to September

Five months of riding.
No two alike.

Most riders come in July. The ones who have been before pick their month on purpose – because a Norwegian summer changes more between May and September than most countries manage all year.

May

Snow walls and blossom

  • Waterfalls at full power. The snow is melting and every fjord wall runs with water.
  • Snow walls on the passes. Ride between banks of snow as the high roads open.
  • Blossom on the Hardangerfjord. Thousands of fruit trees flower from mid-month.
  • 17 May. The national day: flags, brass bands, the whole country outdoors.

The highest roads open during May or later – we plan around the opening dates, and the gravel routes over the high plateaus only start in late June. Nights are cool.

June

The month the light forgets to leave

  • Midnight sun. North of the Arctic Circle the sun does not set at all.
  • Everything open. The last mountain passes are clear by mid-month.
  • Green and new. The high plateaus turn from brown to green in a fortnight.
  • Still quiet. The Norwegian holidays have not started yet.

Mosquitoes wake up in the inland forests. Bring something for the evenings.

July

Warm rock, open mountains

  • The warmest month. Swimming in a fjord that was frozen in April.
  • Everything running. Every road, ferry and mountain lodge at full service.
  • Evenings that go on. Light enough in the south to ride until ten.
  • The classics at their best. Every famous road is open and dry.

The busiest month, so book early. The well-known roads fill up around midday – start early.

August

Berries and warm water

  • Free fruit. Blueberries and cloudberries on the plateaus – anyone may pick them.
  • The sea at its warmest. August, not July, is when Norwegians swim.
  • It empties out. The holidays end mid-month and the roads open up again.
  • The dark returns. The first properly dark nights, and the first stars since May.

Warm days, cooler nights. The weather turns faster than in July – pack the waterproofs.

September

Gold mountains, empty roads

  • Autumn colours. Birch and heather on the plateaus turn gold and red.
  • The roads to yourself. The traffic is gone and the passes are still open.
  • Harvest along the fjords. Apples, plums and cider at farm stalls by the road.
  • Northern lights. From mid-month the nights in the north are dark enough.

Shorter days – plan to reach your stay before dark. Some small mountain roads close late in the month.

Ride in May or September and your trip costs less. You book your own beds along these routes, and outside the summer holidays the hotels, cabins and campsites charge noticeably less – and they still have room a few days before you arrive. In high summer the well-known places along the fjords are full weeks ahead, so fix your dates early and book your nights straight away.
